Developed at the King Ranch in Southern Texas, and named after a Spanish Land Grant, Santa Gertrudis has been recognized by the United States Department of Agriculture since 1940. The Santa Gertrudis Breed was developed to thrive in the grasses of Southern Texas, as well as being renowned for their ability to adapt to harsh climates and heat.

These cattle are red, and along with their ability to adapt to climate, are also known for good beef production, good milking ability, resistance to parasites and ease of calving and mothering. The Santa Gertrudis origins stem from the union of Brahman Bulls and with Beef Shorthorn cows. The resulting mix being 38ths Brahman and 5/8th Shorthorn.

In 1940, the Santa Gertrudis was recognized by the United States Department of Agriculture for being the very first developed beef breed from the United States. Currently there are around 11,500 registered Santa Gertrudis in the United States.
